1098-T: what it is, and how to get it from your school
By Arthur Teboul, DokuTrak · Published
In short
Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement) is the form a college or other eligible school sends each student by January 31. It shows the qualified tuition paid in box 1 and the scholarships or grants in box 5. To get it, sign in to the student account on the school’s website; parents usually need the student to download it for them.

What is a 1098-T?
Form 1098-T reports box 1 payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses, box 5 scholarships or grants, and adjustments to a prior year in boxes 4 and 6. Box 8 shows whether you were at least a half-time student.
The form is in the student’s name even when parents paid. Preparers use it, with payment records, to check education credits.
Who sends it, and when
The college, university or other eligible educational institution issues it, and must furnish it to the student by January 31. Many schools post it online through a tax form service and send paper only on request.
Where to get a 1098-T
- The student portal, under Billing, Student account or Tax information.
- The tax form service the school uses, linked from the bursar’s office page.
- The mail, at the student’s address on file, if the school sends paper.
- The bursar’s or student accounts office, for a reissued copy.
Wrong files people send instead
- A tuition bill or account statement instead of the 1098-T.
- The 1098-T alone, without records of what was paid out of pocket for books or fees.
- Last year’s form, still at the top of the student account.
- Nothing because the student, not the parent, has the login.
Questions people ask
How do I get my 1098-T?
Sign in to your student account on the school’s website and look under billing or tax information. If you cannot find it, ask the bursar’s office.
Can a parent get the student’s 1098-T?
The form is issued to the student, so the parent usually needs the student to download it or grant access.
Ask once. DokuTrak does the chasing.
- Your client uploads from one link, with no account and no password.
- Reminders go out on a schedule, by default 2, 5, 10 and 14 days after the request, until the file arrives.
- With AI review switched on in your workspace (it is off by default), each upload gets a first pass that flags a file that is not a 1098-T or an unreadable or blurry scan. It says so when it is not sure.
- You accept every file or mark it for re-upload, and your client gets the note by email. The AI never accepts a file.
