DoorDash tax documents: what a Dasher gathers for the return

By Arthur Teboul, DokuTrak · Published

In brief

Your DoorDash tax documents are the Form 1099-NEC in the Dasher app, two emails DoorDash sends in January (your tip total and a mileage estimate), and your own records of miles, parking, phone and gear. This checklist says where each one comes from and what a preparer does with it.

The checklist: Dasher year-end folder: DoorDash tax papers

Hand this to the Dasher in January. Each line names the DoorDash screen or email it comes from; cross out what does not apply and note what is still on its way.

Build your own list: Answer 10 yes-or-no questions and the tax document checklist generator combines the lists that apply into one checklist.

What DoorDash sends a Dasher, and where it lives

DoorDash treats Dashers as independent contractors and does not withhold tax from their pay (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes). For 2025 pay, it posts a Form 1099-NEC in the Dasher app if you earned $600 or more (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes). To find it, tap the earnings pill, then View payout details, then Tax documents, and pick the year.

The year menu starts at 2024, and a deactivated account has to go through DoorDash Support (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes). The form is ready by January 31; if you opted out of e-delivery, the paper copy is postmarked by that date (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes).

A Form 1099-NEC is the IRS form a business uses to report what it paid someone who is not its employee. DoorDash’s version shows a single number. DoorDash says plainly that it does not split earnings into base pay, tips, pay boosts or milestones (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes).

Two quirks explain most gaps between that number and your bank. DoorDash counts pay by the date it was deposited, not the date you dashed, so a dash on December 30 can land in the next year (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes). Reimbursements, such as an order you paid for in cash, are left out of the total (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes).

When a Dasher gets no 1099 at all

DoorDash’s $600 line describes the forms for 2025 pay (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes). For payments made in 2026, the federal floor for Form 1099-NEC is $2,000 (Form 1099-NEC instructions (12/2026)). So a Dasher who made $1,500 on the app in 2026 may find an empty Tax documents screen next January (Form 1099-NEC instructions (12/2026)).

The pay still goes on the return. The IRS says gig workers report all income, even with no Form 1099, and must file once net self-employment earnings reach $400 (IRS, Manage taxes for your gig work). The monthly earnings statements then stand in for the form. Which payer owes which form, year by year, is laid out on the contractor 1099 checklist.

The tip email and the tips deduction

Delivery tips can now come off taxable income. Here, qualified tips are voluntary cash or card tips from customers (IRS, Working Families Tax Cuts for workers). The final rule names app-based delivery among Goods Delivery People, code 804 (Final tipped occupations rule). The cap is $25,000 a year for 2025 through 2028, and never more than your net profit from dashing (IRS FS-2026-07).

Dashers whose modified AGI exceeds $150,000 ($300,000 joint) get a reduced deduction, and a Social Security number is required (IRS, Working Families Tax Cuts for workers). Because Dashers are self-employed, a tip qualifies only when it is reported within the amount on a 1099 (IRS FS-2026-07).

That is the snag for a small Dasher in 2026: under the $2,000 line there may be no 1099 for the tips to sit in (Form 1099-NEC instructions (12/2026)). Keep the tip email anyway, and ask a preparer before you claim it. The December 2026 Form 1099-NEC also adds box 1b for cash tips and box 1c for the tipped occupation code (Form 1099-NEC instructions (12/2026)). If DoorDash fills them in, that box becomes your tip record.

The mileage estimate email, and rebuilding a log

DoorDash emails a mileage estimate by January 31 to US Dashers who delivered by car and had on-delivery miles (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes). Use it as a floor, not as the log. It reflects delivery miles only, while Publication 463 wants every business trip logged plus the car’s mileage for the whole year (IRS Publication 463).

A mileage log is that record, trip by trip: the date, the area, the purpose and the miles. Dash miles from 2025 are priced at 70 cents each (IRS standard mileage rates). For 2026 dashes, the mileage log checklist walks through the January-to-June and July-to-December subtotals.

If you did not log as you drove, rebuild it from records made at the time, never from a year-end guess. Good sources include:

  • Dash history in the app, with the date and hours of each dash.
  • Phone location history, such as a map timeline, for the routes you drove.
  • Repair and oil change invoices that show an odometer reading and a date.
  • Gas receipts dated on dash days, to back up the pattern.

Paying during the year, and handing the file over

With nothing withheld from Dasher pay (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes), the tax on it falls due through the year. A Dasher who also holds a W-2 job can ask that employer to withhold more instead of paying estimates (IRS, Manage taxes for your gig work). Otherwise, the due dates and safe-harbor amounts are on the self-employed checklist.

Then send everything in one batch, in this order:

  1. Download the 1099-NEC, and save the tip and mileage emails as PDFs.
  2. Download the twelve monthly earnings statements from the Dasher app.
  3. Finish the mileage log and note the odometer on the first and last day of the year.
  4. Sort parking, toll, phone and gear receipts into one folder.
  5. Add estimated payment confirmations, or the new W-4 you gave your employer.

Questions people ask

Do I have to report DoorDash income if I did not get a 1099?

Yes. The IRS says gig income is reported even when no Form 1099 arrives (IRS, Manage taxes for your gig work). The monthly earnings statements in the Dasher app and your bank deposits are the record of what DoorDash paid you.

How do I get my 1099 from DoorDash?

In the Dasher app, tap the earnings pill, then View payout details, then Tax documents, and pick the year; the menu goes back to 2024 (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes). For a deactivated account, contact DoorDash Support.

Can Dashers deduct their tips?

For 2025 through 2028, within limits. App-based delivery is on the tipped-jobs list (Final tipped occupations rule), and the tips have to appear in a 1099 amount, capped at net profit from dashing (IRS FS-2026-07). The deduction phases out above $150,000 of modified AGI, $300,000 joint (IRS, Working Families Tax Cuts for workers).

Why does my DoorDash 1099 not match my deposits?

DoorDash counts pay by deposit date, so late-December dashes can fall into the next year, and it leaves cash reimbursements out of the total (DoorDash, Dasher Guide to Taxes). Line the monthly statements up against your bank to find the gap.

  • IRS FS-2026-07: Gig workers may deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips for 2025 through 2028, capped at net business income, only if the tips are inside a 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC or 1099-K total; QBI is permanent; the 1099-K line is over $20,000 and over 200 transactions.
  • IRS, Working Families Tax Cuts for workers: Qualified tips are voluntary cash or charged tips; the deduction phases out above $150,000 of modified AGI ($300,000 joint), needs an SSN, and excludes the self-employed in an SSTB and employees of an SSTB employer.
