AI for Personal Injury Lawyers: 11 Tasks You Can Hand Off

A personal injury firm is not paid for its hours. It is paid when a case settles, so every hour a paralegal spends on one file is margin taken from the next. That is the only test AI has to pass in a PI practice: more cases per person, with the same care on each.

AI for personal injury lawyers means software that takes over a specific task in the case (answering leads, reading medical records, drafting a demand) while the lawyer keeps every decision. Below are the 11 tasks, in the order a case meets them, with the tools that handle each and what they cost as of September 2026.

AI for personal injury lawyers: the 11 tasks at a glance

Prices were read on each vendor's own site on 2026-09-19. "On request" means the vendor publishes no price.

Intake: answer every lead and qualify it fast

The first place a PI firm loses cases is the phone. In the secret-shopper study of Clio's 2024 Legal Trends Report, which contacted 500 US law firms, only 40% answered calls and 33% answered emails, and 48% did neither, as summarized by the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism (2Civility, retrieved 2026-09-19).¹ An injured caller who reaches voicemail calls the next firm.

Three tools cover this:

• Smith.ai runs an AI receptionist that screens leads and routes calls. Its free tier covers 25 calls a month, then $3 a call; Pro is $150 a month.
• Caseflood.ai is built for plaintiff intake and pairs human reps with AI texting. Pricing on request.
• Lawmatics is an intake CRM whose "Merlin Qualify" feature scores leads. Pricing on request.

AI screens. A lawyer still decides whether the firm takes the case.

The documents: what the client holds vs what providers hold

A PI file is built from two piles, and they come from different people. Most AI roundups skip both piles and start at the chronology. The chronology cannot start until the paper is in.

From the client: photos, estimates, the declarations page, pay stubs

FindLaw's list of personal injury paperwork includes the accident report, medical bills, insurance information, and property-damage photographs and repair estimates (FindLaw, retrieved 2026-09-19).² Several of those sit on the client's phone or in their inbox:

• a copy of the police or accident report
• photos of the scene, the vehicle and the injuries
• the repair estimate
• their own auto policy and its declarations page
• pay stubs or an employer letter for lost wages
• receipts for out-of-pocket costs

The client is recovering from an injury. They send two photos in one email, the estimate a week later, and forget the pay stubs. The paralegal writes the follow-ups. Here is what that can cost: if a new case needs six items from the client and half of them take two follow-ups of five minutes each, that is 30 minutes per case. At 20 new cases a month, that is 10 hours of chasing a month.

From providers: medical records and bills

The documents that make or break a demand, the medical records and itemized bills, usually come from providers, through a HIPAA authorization and a records request. Under 45 CFR 164.524, a provider has 30 days to act on an access request, plus one 30-day extension if it explains the delay in writing, and the same rule covers a copy sent to a third party the patient names, such as their lawyer (Cornell LII, 45 CFR 164.524, retrieved 2026-09-19).³

None of them can make a provider answer faster than the law requires. They make sure the request goes out on day one and someone follows up.

Medical chronologies and treatment gaps

This is where AI saves the most reading. In a February 2026 ABA Law Technology Today guide, the author calls medical records "the most important element of damages" in a PI case, "often running into thousands of pages", and says reviewing them by hand is one of the most time-consuming and error-prone tasks in the practice (American Bar Association, retrieved 2026-09-19).⁴

• Legalyze.ai reviews medical records and surfaces missing records, treatment gaps and prior injuries. Custom pricing.

AI medical chronology: what to check before you rely on it

Treat the chronology as a first draft. Check three things:

1. Every entry links to its source page. If you cannot click from a line to the page it came from, you cannot defend it.
2. Gaps in treatment are listed. The ABA guide prompts for gaps, prior injuries and pre-existing conditions. So will the adjuster.
3. Missing bills are named. EvenUp's own guide lists detecting missing bills and treatment gaps as a job for AI (a vendor source). If the missing item is one the client holds, such as a pharmacy receipt, it goes back to the client pile above.

Demand letters and settlement prep

AI drafts the demand letter and package from the medical file; the lawyer sets the number and signs. It is the product most PI AI vendors sell first.

• EvenUp drafts demands drawing on what it describes as a 250K+ verdict and settlement dataset, and offers a negotiation assistant.
• Supio drafts demands and analyzes cases for plaintiff firms.
• Anytime AI generates demand letters in the firm's own format.
• Filevine offers DemandsAI, with LOIS for Word for drafting inside Microsoft Word.
• CloudLex offers Lexee, which it describes as AI-assisted demand drafts and medical summaries "with expert review".
• Eve Legal runs nightly audits across open cases.

All pricing on request. Before you sign, ask two questions. First: what is AI, and what is people? Some vendors say openly that experts review the AI's drafts, as CloudLex does. That can be a strength, but you should know who reads your client's records. Second: what is the term? A per-demand price you can stop is a different bet from a multi-year commitment.

The lawyer signs the demand. The number in it is the lawyer's call.

Keeping the client in the loop

ABA Model Rule 1.4(a)(3) requires a lawyer to "keep the client reasonably informed about the status of the matter" (American Bar Association, Rule 1.4, retrieved 2026-09-19).⁵ During months of treatment, that means a lot of "where is my case?" calls.

Liens: the step AI has not taken over

I found no dedicated AI tool for this one. CMS's recovery contractor recovers Medicare conditional payments when there is a settlement, judgment, award or other payment, and CMS says beneficiaries and their attorneys "should recognize the obligation to reimburse Medicare during any settlement negotiations" (CMS, retrieved 2026-09-19).⁶ That work stays with a paralegal, your case management system and CMS's own Medicare Secondary Payer Recovery Portal (MSPRP).

If the case is filed: discovery and depositions

Once suit is filed, AI drafts written discovery and turns deposition audio into transcripts and summaries. Both are drafts a lawyer edits before anything is served or relied on.

How to choose AI for a PI firm

Start with the case management you already run, then add tools where cases wait.

1. Check the fit with your case management system. CasePeer starts at $90 per user per month, with an AI writing assistant on its Pro and Advanced plans. Clio sells a "Clio for Personal Injury" add-on through its sales team. Filevine and CloudLex price on request. Some chronology and demand tools live inside these systems; others sit beside them.
2. Compare per-use and contract pricing. InPractice charges per page and LlamaLab per request. Many demand vendors sell annual or multi-year contracts. Per-use pricing lets you test on ten cases before you commit.
3. Ask what is AI and what is outsourced people. Both can be fine. You should know which one reads your client's records.
4. Mind confidentiality with general chatbots. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 29, 2024) applies the duties of competence, confidentiality and reasonable fees to generative AI.⁷ Before a client file goes into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, know where that data goes.
5. Start where the case waits longest. For most PI firms that is records: from providers (a retrieval service) and from the client (a request with reminders). A faster chronology does not help a file that is still missing its bills.
