CP575: the IRS EIN assignment notice and its digital version
By Arthur Teboul, DokuTrak · Published
In brief
The CP575 is the IRS notice that confirms an employer identification number: the original CP575A-J is mailed once when the EIN is assigned and cannot be reissued, while a digital CP575 can be downloaded from Business Tax Account (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice). Banks accept the digital version as written proof of the EIN, in place of Letter 147C (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice).
The letter: Client letter: please send us your EIN confirmation
Use this when onboarding a business client whose EIN letter you do not have. It explains the three documents that prove an EIN and how the client gets one today. Keep the paragraph that matches the client’s entity type.

[Firm name] [Date] [Client contact name] [Business legal name] Re: Proof of your EIN for our records
Dear [Client contact name],
What we need
To set up [payroll / your tax filings / your bank account], we need a copy of an IRS document that shows your business name and EIN together. A photo of a W-9 or a past return is not enough for this purpose.
If you still have it
If you kept the notice the IRS mailed when it assigned your EIN (titled CP575), or the confirmation letter printed at the end of the online application, a clear scan of all pages is all we need.
Download it (corporations, partnerships, sole proprietors)(optional)
If you lost it, you can download a digital CP575 from the IRS Business Tax Account: sign in at irs.gov, choose [Business legal name], open Tax Records and download the EIN verification letter. Only [an officer / a general partner / the owner] can see this page. For a corporation, only an officer who received a W-2 from the business for the latest year can see it.
Call instead (Schedule C or F LLCs, trusts, estates, or a corporation whose officer gets no W-2)(optional)
Business Tax Account has no download for your business. Please call the IRS business line and ask for Letter 147C, EIN Previously Assigned. Have a fax number ready, or the IRS will mail it to the address it has on file. If you prefer, sign the enclosed Form 8821 and we will make the call for you.
Check before you send
Please check that the name and address on the letter match your current details. If they do not, tell us before you send it to anyone else: we may need to update the IRS record first.
Deadline
Please upload it by [date]. We will remind you until it arrives.
Best regards, [Your name] [Firm name] [Phone] | [Email] [Enclosure: Form 8821, prepared for your signature]
The original notice and the digital one
The CP575A-J series is the Notice of New Employer Identification Number the IRS issues when it assigns the number (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice). The letters A to J are versions of one notice series. You do not need a particular letter suffix to prove an EIN.
By contrast, the digital CP575 is the Employer Identification Number Verification Notice, available only inside Business Tax Account (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice). The IRS says it can stand in for both the original notice and Letter 147C, EIN Previously Assigned (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice).
The IRS manual dates the download to June 25, 2026 (IRM 21.7.1.4.7.1, EIN verification and Letter 147C), and IR-2026-87 announced it to designated officials on August 6, 2026 (IRS news release IR-2026-87 (Aug. 6, 2026)). You may need it, for example, to open a bank account for the entity or to obtain other business services (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice).
| Document | When you get it | How to get it now | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original CP575A-J (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice) | Once, when the EIN is assigned | Cannot be duplicated or recreated (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice) | IRS notice page |
| Digital CP575 (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice) | Any time, on demand | Business Tax Account, under Tax Records (IRS: Business Tax Account) | IRS BTA page |
| Letter 147C | On request | Phone 800-829-4933; fax or mail to the address of record (IRS: Employer identification number) | IRS EIN page |
| Online confirmation letter | End of the online application | Print it before leaving the session (IRS: Get an employer identification number) | IRS EIN application page |
How long the first EIN notice takes
The timing depends on how the EIN was requested. Online, the number is issued at once and the confirmation letter is printed at the end of the session (IRS: Get an employer identification number).
- Fax: Form SS-4 to 855-641-6935; the IRS faxes back a cover sheet with the EIN in about 4 business days if you give a fax number (IRS: Employer identification number).
- Mail: Form SS-4 to the EIN Operation in Cincinnati; the EIN arrives in about 4 weeks (IRS: Employer identification number).
- The IRS no longer returns a Form SS-4 marked with the EIN (IRS: Employer identification number). An SS-4 a client kept is not proof of the number.
Downloading the digital CP575
A designated official is the person Business Tax Account recognizes as able to act for the entity, and only that person can download the notice (IRS: Business Tax Account). Your firm cannot log in for the client; the owner or officer must, for example the president of a corporation.
- Sign in to Business Tax Account with the same IRS sign-in used for the individual online account (IRS: Business Tax Account).
- Choose the business, if the person is linked to more than one entity (IRS: Business Tax Account).
- Open Tax Records and download the EIN verification letter (IRS: Business Tax Account).
- Save the PDF in the client file and send a copy to whoever asked for it.
Who can use Business Tax Account today
Eligibility depends on the entity and on the person’s role. Check it before you tell a client to download anything, because an ineligible client will find no letter to download.
Two gaps catch firms out. A corporation’s designated official must be an officer or managing member who is also a current employee with a W-2 for the latest filing year (IRS: Business Tax Account). So an owner who takes no salary has no route in. Trusts and estates are not on the list at all (IRS: Business Tax Account). Those clients request Letter 147C instead, and a firm holding Form 8821 notated for the 147C can make the call (IRM 21.7.1.4.7.1, EIN verification and Letter 147C).
| Entity | Who can download | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sole proprietor with an EIN, filing Schedule C or F | The owner, with an SSN or ITIN (IRS: Business Tax Account) | IRS BTA page |
| LLC filing as a sole proprietor on Schedule C or F | Not yet supported: request Letter 147C instead (IRS: Business Tax Account) | IRS BTA page |
| Partnership (Form 1065) | A general partner or a managing partner of the LLC (IRS: Business Tax Account) | IRS BTA page |
| S or C corporation | An officer or managing member who is a current employee, received a W-2 for the latest filing year and can bind the entity (IRS: Business Tax Account) | IRS BTA page |
| Single-member LLC filing Form 1065 or 1120-S | Designated official access is listed as coming soon: request Letter 147C (IRS: Business Tax Account) | IRS BTA page |
| Trust or estate | Not on the BTA list: request Letter 147C (IRS: Business Tax Account) | IRS BTA page |
| Tax-exempt organization | An officer, board chair or trustee (IRS: Business Tax Account) | IRS BTA page |
When the CP575 shows the wrong name or address
A notice prints what the IRS record held on its date. If the address or responsible party changed since, file Form 8822-B first, then download a fresh CP575 once the change posts (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice).
For a new legal name, follow the IRS business name change procedure, then request new proof (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice). Keep the digital notice in the permanent file; the IRS suggests making copies for future EIN checks (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice).
Questions people ask
Can the IRS send me a copy of my original CP575?
No. The IRS says the original CP575A-J notice cannot be duplicated or recreated (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice). Download the digital CP575 from Business Tax Account, or request Letter 147C by phone (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice).
CP575 or 147C: which one does my bank need?
Either one confirms the EIN. The IRS says banks and other institutions accept the digital CP575 as written confirmation, the same role Letter 147C plays (IRS: Understanding your CP575 notice).
Will the IRS email me my CP575?
No. The IRS pages describe a download from Business Tax Account, or a 147C sent by fax or to the address of record, and no email delivery (IRM 21.7.1.4.7.1, EIN verification and Letter 147C).
Why can’t I see the EIN letter in my business account?
Usually the role or the entity type. Only a designated official sees the full Tax Records, a corporation’s official must have a W-2 from it for the latest year, and LLCs filing on Schedule C or F are not yet supported (IRS: Business Tax Account).

- Your client uploads from one link, with no account and no password.
- Reminders go out on a schedule, by default 2, 5, 10 and 14 days after the request, until the file arrives.
- With AI review switched on in your workspace (it is off by default), each upload gets a first pass that flags a file that is not the requested document or an unreadable or blurry scan. It says so when it is not sure.
- You accept every file or mark it for re-upload, and your client gets the note by email. The AI never accepts a file.
