How to use it

  1. Check the route first: a written request is for a second B notice. Otherwise call the IRS business line or use Business Tax Account.
  2. Fill in the business, the EIN, the return it files and the IRS service center address from the IRS where-to-file page.
  3. Add the payer, the date of the notice and the account number it shows.
  4. Keep the optional clauses that apply: a trade name, or a representative with Form 2848.
  5. Copy the letter or save the PDF, sign it, enclose a copy of the B notice and mail it the day the notice arrives.

What this letter does

It asks the IRS to mail or fax Letter 147C to the business. It does not reach the IRS by itself, and no website can request a 147C for you: every IRS route is free. The generator runs in your browser; your EIN and details are not sent or stored.

Questions about this tool

When do I need a written 147C request?

When a payer sent you a second B notice saying your name and EIN do not match IRS records. The IRS manual tells phone staff that this request must be in writing. For a bank or a lender, call the IRS business line or download the digital notice in Business Tax Account instead.

Where do I send the 147C request?

To the IRS service center where the business files its income tax return. The IRS where-to-file page lists the address for each return type and state.

How fast does the IRS answer?

By fax during or right after a phone call; a mailed letter takes 10 to 14 business days, according to the IRS manual. After a second B notice, the payer must start backup withholding if it has not received the 147C within 30 business days, so mail the request the day the notice arrives.

Can I request a 147C online?

There is no online request form. An eligible business can download the digital CP575 in Business Tax Account, which the IRS treats as a substitute for Letter 147C.

Is the generator free?

Yes. Copying the letter and saving it as a PDF need nothing. The Word file asks for your email address, and we email you its link.
