Credit card statement: what it is, and where to find it

By Arthur Teboul, DokuTrak · Published

In short

A credit card statement is the monthly bill your card issuer produces at the end of each billing cycle: every purchase, payment, fee and interest charge, the statement balance, the minimum payment and the due date. Download it as a PDF from the issuer’s website or app, under Statements. A list of recent transactions is not the statement.

What is a credit card statement?

Each statement covers one billing cycle, usually about a month. It shows the cardholder’s name, the last digits of the card number, the cycle dates, the previous balance, payments and credits, purchases, fees, interest, the new statement balance, the minimum payment due and the payment due date.

Tax preparers and bookkeepers use statements to match business expenses to receipts. Lenders read them to see monthly payments and balances.

Who sends it, and when

The bank or company that issued the card produces a statement at the close of each billing cycle, once a month. It appears in your online account when the cycle closes, and by mail too unless you chose paperless.

Where to get a credit card statement

  1. The card issuer’s website, under Statements or Documents, where each month is a downloadable PDF.
  2. The issuer’s mobile app, usually in the account menu rather than on the activity screen.
  3. The number on the back of the card, to request statements older than what the website shows.
  4. Your mail or email inbox, if you receive statement notices there.

Wrong files people send instead

  • A screenshot of current activity instead of the closed statement.
  • The summary page only, without the transaction pages.
  • The statement for a different card from the same issuer.
  • An annual spending summary in place of the monthly statements requested.

Questions people ask

What is a credit card statement?

It is the monthly record of one card account: purchases, payments, fees and interest during the billing cycle, the balance owed, the minimum payment and the due date.

What is the difference between statement balance and current balance?

The statement balance is what you owed when the billing cycle closed. The current balance adds any purchases and payments made since.

How do I get an old credit card statement?

Download it from the Statements section of the issuer’s website. If the month is older than what is listed, call the number on the back of the card.

  • Your client uploads from one link, with no account and no password.
  • Reminders go out on a schedule, by default 2, 5, 10 and 14 days after the request, until the file arrives.
  • With AI review switched on in your workspace (it is off by default), each upload gets a first pass that flags a file that is not a credit card statement or an unreadable or blurry scan. It says so when it is not sure.
  • You accept every file or mark it for re-upload, and your client gets the note by email. The AI never accepts a file.
