1099-MISC: what it reports, and how it differs from the 1099-NEC

By Arthur Teboul, DokuTrak · Published

In short

A 1099-MISC (Miscellaneous Information) reports income that is neither wages nor contractor pay: rents, royalties, prizes, awards and other income. Since tax year 2020, payments for services go on the 1099-NEC instead. The payer sends your copy by January 31, or by February 15 when box 8 or box 10 is filled in.

What is a 1099-MISC?

Form 1099-MISC has a box for each kind of payment: box 1 rents, box 2 royalties, box 3 other income such as prizes and awards, box 4 federal income tax withheld. Other boxes cover medical payments, crop insurance proceeds and gross proceeds paid to an attorney.

The payer files Copy A with the IRS and sends you Copy B. If a client paid you for your work, expect a 1099-NEC rather than a 1099-MISC; one payer can send you both if it paid you for different things.

Who sends it, and when

The business that paid you issues it: a property manager or tenant business paying rent, a publisher paying royalties, a company awarding a prize. Your copy is due by January 31, or by February 15 when the form reports amounts in box 8 or box 10.

Where to get a 1099-MISC

  1. The mail or your email inbox, from late January to mid-February.
  2. Your property manager’s owner statements area, for rental income.
  3. The royalty or payee account where a publisher, label or licensing company posts statements.
  4. The payer’s accounting contact, who can reissue a lost copy.
  5. For a past year, the IRS Wage and Income transcript in your IRS Online Account.

Wrong files people send instead

  • A 1099-MISC for contractor work sent in place of the 1099-NEC, or the other way round.
  • A property manager’s year-end owner statement instead of the form.
  • Only one form when several tenants, publishers or sponsors paid you.
  • A cropped photo where the box numbers cannot be read.

  • Reminders go out on a schedule, by default 2, 5, 10 and 14 days after the request, until the file arrives.
  • With AI review switched on in your workspace (it is off by default), each upload gets a first pass that flags a file that is not a 1099-MISC or an unreadable or blurry scan. It says so when it is not sure.
  • You accept every file or mark it for re-upload, and your client gets the note by email. The AI never accepts a file.
