1099-INT: what it is, and where your bank posts it

By Arthur Teboul, DokuTrak · Published

In short

A 1099-INT (Interest Income) is the form a bank, credit union or broker sends you by January 31 when it paid you interest during the year, generally USD 10 or more. It shows the interest earned and any tax withheld. You get one per institution, sometimes one per account, and most banks post it in online banking under tax documents.

What is a 1099-INT?

Form 1099-INT reports interest paid to you. Box 1 shows interest income, box 3 interest on US savings bonds and Treasury obligations, box 4 federal income tax withheld, and box 8 tax-exempt interest.

Savings accounts, CDs, money market accounts and bonds can all produce a 1099-INT. At a brokerage, it is often part of a consolidated 1099 together with the 1099-DIV and 1099-B.

Who sends it, and when

The bank, credit union, brokerage or other payer of the interest issues it. Your copy is due by January 31 of the following year. Online-only banks usually post it as a PDF and send no paper.

Where to get a 1099-INT

  1. Online banking, usually under Statements, Documents or Tax forms.
  2. Your brokerage account’s tax center, inside the consolidated 1099.
  3. The mail, at the address the bank has on file.
  4. The bank’s customer service, which can resend a copy for a closed account.
  5. For a past year, the IRS Wage and Income transcript in your IRS Online Account.

Wrong files people send instead

  • A December bank statement instead of the 1099-INT.
  • Forms from the main bank only, forgetting a high-yield savings account or a CD elsewhere.
  • Nothing for an account closed during the year: it can still produce a form.
  • Only the first page of a consolidated brokerage 1099.

Questions people ask

Why did I not get a 1099-INT?

Banks generally issue one when they paid you USD 10 or more in interest. Below that you may get no form, but the interest is still taxable income.

Is interest on a 1099-INT taxable?

Interest in box 1 is generally taxable. Tax-exempt interest, such as some municipal bond interest, appears separately in box 8.

  • Your client uploads from one link, with no account and no password.
  • Reminders go out on a schedule, by default 2, 5, 10 and 14 days after the request, until the file arrives.
  • With AI review switched on in your workspace (it is off by default), each upload gets a first pass that flags a file that is not a 1099-INT, an unreadable or blurry scan or a copy where one of these is missing or cut off: the recipient’s name, the interest income amount. It says so when it is not sure.
  • You accept every file or mark it for re-upload, and your client gets the note by email. The AI never accepts a file.
