> CPA firms preparing business returns collect K-1s, 1099s, bank and credit card statements, prior-year returns, W-9s, invoices, leases and loan statements from each client. Requests go out after year-end, ahead of the March 15 deadline for partnerships and S corps and the April deadline for Schedule C. The friction: statements missing a month, unreconciled accounts and K-1s that arrive late.

Business returns and year-end work depend on records the client keeps across banks, card issuers, payroll and vendors. The firm usually sends a year-end list in January, then works through what comes back account by account, often alongside the bookkeeper’s close.

The work stalls when a statement covers eleven months instead of twelve, when the client sends a summary instead of the full statement, or when a K-1 from an outside partnership has not been issued yet. Owners busy running the business answer the easy items first and leave the rest for later, so a short, specific request per document helps.
