> **In brief:** For a California REAL ID, proof of residency is two different printed documents, such as a home utility bill and a bank statement. Each must show your first and last name and the same California mailing address you put on the application ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

## What is California proof of residency?

In DMV terms, **residency documents** are records from a third party that tie your name to a California address. Both must match the mailing address on your application, and both must be different kinds of document ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

The California list is long and generous. Beyond bills and bank records, it counts faith-based documents, USPS change-of-address confirmations and court papers listing you as a California resident ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

A REAL ID needs proof of identity, proof of California residency and a visit to a DMV office ([California DMV, What is REAL ID?](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/what-is-real-id/)). Applicants for an AB 60 license cannot get a REAL ID card ([California DMV, What is REAL ID?](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/what-is-real-id/)).

## Who sends it, and when

Utilities, phone carriers, banks, credit unions, card issuers, insurers, employers, landlords, county tax collectors, the IRS or the Franchise Tax Board, schools and the Secretary of State or county elections officer all issue documents on the DMV list. A homeless shelter, nonprofit, faith-based group, employer or government agency can also write a letter saying you live in California ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

## Where to get California proof of residency

1. Build your list with the DMV’s interactive REAL ID checklist and tick two different residency documents.
2. Start the online REAL ID application and upload images of the documents, then save the confirmation code ([California DMV, REAL ID](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/)).
3. Print the originals of what you uploaded and bring them to the office appointment ([California DMV, REAL ID](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/)).
4. If you use a P.O. box, make sure one paper shows both the box and the street address.

## Wrong files people send instead

- Two papers of the same type, such as two bank statements, when the DMV asks for two different documents.
- A residency document with a mailing address that differs from the one typed on the application.
- Bills in a parent’s or spouse’s name with no birth certificate, marriage license or partner certificate to trace the link.
- A tracing document in a maiden name with no proof of the later name change.

## Residency documents the California DMV accepts

The DMV marks home utility and cell phone bills as its preferred proof. Everything below counts too, as long as you bring two different items ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

| Group | Documents on the DMV list |
| --- | --- |
| Bills and money | Home utility or cell phone bill; bank, credit union or card statement; mortgage bill |
| Home | Signed rental or lease agreement; deed or title; property tax bill; homeowners’ property tax exemption claim (BOE-266) ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)) |
| Insurance and health | Medical, dental, vision, life, home, renters or vehicle insurance; medical documents |
| Work and tax | Employment documents; IRS or Franchise Tax Board tax return |
| Government | Any U.S. government agency document; voter registration letter or postcard; court papers naming you a resident; vehicle or vessel title or registration |
| Other | USPS change-of-address confirmation; school document with your birth date; faith-based document; resident tuition receipt; shelter, nonprofit or employer letter; No Fee ID eligibility form (DL 933) ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)) |

## Using a P.O. box as your mailing address

California lets the card show a post office box, but the DMV still needs to see where you sleep. Your **physical address** is the street address of the home itself. One of the two documents must show both the P.O. box and that physical address; the second may show the box alone ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

A lease or property tax bill often carries the street address while bank mail goes to the box. Pair them that way and both will match the application.

## When your name is not on any bill

**Name tracing** means using a civil record to link you to the person whose name is on the residency documents. California accepts a birth certificate, a marriage license or a domestic partner registration certificate for that link ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

For example, an adult living with a parent can bring the parent’s utility bill and lease plus their own birth certificate. If a name changed through marriage, divorce or a court order, add the document that shows the change ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

No relative to trace to? The list also accepts a letter from an employer, nonprofit, shelter or faith-based organization attesting that you live in California ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

## Uploading residency documents before your visit

The DMV prompts you to upload residency papers, such as a utility bill or bank statement, during the online application ([California DMV, REAL ID](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/)). Uploading first shortens the office visit.

1. Scan or photograph each page flat, with all four corners and the address readable.
2. Upload identity and residency documents when the online form asks for them ([California DMV, REAL ID](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/)).
3. Write down the confirmation code shown at the end.
4. Bring the same originals to the appointment; a first REAL ID needs an in-person visit ([California DMV, What is REAL ID?](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/what-is-real-id/)).

## DMV residency versus tuition residency

Passing the DMV check does not settle in-state tuition. Under the Education Code, a resident student has lived in California for more than one year before the residence determination date ([California Education Code § 68017](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=EDC&sectionNum=68017)).

Colleges run that test with their own forms. The link runs the other way too: proof that you paid resident tuition at a California public college is on the DMV list ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

## The template: California DMV residency documents request

Send this to a client or employee preparing a California REAL ID appointment. Keep the tracing paragraph only if their name is missing from the household bills.

Subject: Two California residency papers for your REAL ID, by [date]

```text
Hi [Client name],
For your REAL ID appointment on [date], the DMV wants two different printed documents, each with your first and last name and the exact mailing address on your application. Good pairs:
- Cell phone or home utility bill + bank statement
- Signed lease + car insurance policy
Using a P.O. box? One paper must show the box and your street address.
If the bills are in a parent’s or spouse’s name, bring theirs plus your birth certificate or marriage license.
Upload them in the online application first, then bring the originals.
Best,
[Your name]
```

## Questions people ask

### Does mail count as proof of residency in California?

Mail from a listed source does, such as a government agency, bank, insurer or employer. A letter from a friend does not. Every item still needs your first and last name and the same address as the application ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

### What if I live with my parents in California?

Bring two of their residency documents and your birth certificate to show the relationship. The DMV accepts that tracing in place of bills in your own name ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

### Can I show residency documents on my phone at the DMV?

Plan on paper. The DMV asks for printed documents and for the originals of anything you uploaded online ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).

### Which two documents are easiest to get quickly?

A bank or card statement printed from your online account and a cell phone bill are usually fastest. The DMV lists both as accepted, and calls utility and cell phone bills its preferred proof ([California DMV, REAL ID checklist](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/)).
