> **In brief:** Proof of income for Social Security is the benefit verification letter, which you download from your my Social Security account or request by phone. For a past year, Form SSA-1099 shows the total benefits paid, and lenders also accept the award letter or bank deposits.

## What is Social Security proof of income?

**A benefit verification letter** is the Social Security Administration’s letter stating that you receive benefits and how much. The agency says lenders, housing programs and others often need it, and that it may be called a "proof of income letter" or a "benefit letter" ([Social Security Administration, Get a benefit verification letter](https://www.ssa.gov/manage-benefits/get-benefit-letter)).

It is personalized to your status. The agency says it can show that you receive benefits, that you applied, or that you do not receive benefits, and it covers Social Security, Supplemental Security Income and Medicare ([Social Security Administration, Get a benefit verification letter](https://www.ssa.gov/manage-benefits/get-benefit-letter)).

By contrast, **Form SSA-1099** is the yearly tax statement of what you were paid. The IRS says it reports benefits paid in the prior calendar year and should arrive by early February ([IRS Tax Topic 423, Social Security and equivalent railroad retirement benefits](https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc423)). It proves last year; the letter proves now.

## Who sends it, and when

The Social Security Administration issues both documents, about your own record. You request the letter yourself and pass it on. The lender, landlord or housing office usually asks you for it, so plan for the request in your own timeline.

## Where to get Social Security proof of income

1. Sign in to your my Social Security account and download the benefit letter as a PDF; the agency says this gets it right away ([Social Security Administration, Get a benefit verification letter](https://www.ssa.gov/manage-benefits/get-benefit-letter)).
2. No account? Call the automated line at 800-772-1213 and say "proof of income" when asked how it can help ([Social Security Administration, Get a benefit verification letter](https://www.ssa.gov/manage-benefits/get-benefit-letter)).
3. For last year’s total, download Form SSA-1099 from the same account, or use the copy mailed to you ([IRS Tax Topic 423, Social Security and equivalent railroad retirement benefits](https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc423)).
4. Add the bank statement showing the latest deposit if the requester wants proof the money arrives.

## Wrong files people send instead

- Sending last year’s SSA-1099 when the requester asked for current benefits.
- A benefit letter from years ago that does not show the current monthly amount.
- A screenshot of the account page instead of the PDF letter.
- Sending the letter for the wrong person on a joint application.

## Benefit letter, SSA-1099 or award letter: which to send

Each Social Security document proves something slightly different. Match it to the question the requester is asking: for example, a landlord asks what you get now, while a tax preparer asks what you got last year.

| Document | What it proves | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Benefit verification letter | Your current benefit and status | Landlords, housing programs, lenders |
| Form SSA-1099 | Total benefits paid last calendar year | Tax returns, income averaging |
| Award letter | The benefit granted and when it starts | New retirees, lenders |
| Bank statement | That the deposit arrives each month | Proof of current receipt |

## What a mortgage lender accepts

Fannie Mae’s guide lists the papers by benefit type. For retirement or disability on your own record, the lender may use the award letter, the SSA-1099, your latest signed tax returns or transcripts, or proof of current receipt ([Fannie Mae Selling Guide B3-3.4-15, Social Security Income](https://selling-guide.fanniemae.com/sel/b3-3.4-15/social-security-income)).

Benefits drawn on another person’s record, such as a survivor or a child, need more. There the guide asks for the award letter and proof of current receipt, and the income must continue for at least three years from the application ([Fannie Mae Selling Guide B3-3.4-15, Social Security Income](https://selling-guide.fanniemae.com/sel/b3-3.4-15/social-security-income)). For retirement or long-term disability on your own record, the lender checks continuance only if it has reason to doubt it ([Fannie Mae Selling Guide B3-3.4-15, Social Security Income](https://selling-guide.fanniemae.com/sel/b3-3.4-15/social-security-income)).

**Gross-up** is the lender adding back the tax-free share of a benefit so it compares with taxable pay. The guide lets a lender treat 15% of Social Security income as nontaxable without more paperwork ([Fannie Mae Selling Guide B3-3.4-15, Social Security Income](https://selling-guide.fanniemae.com/sel/b3-3.4-15/social-security-income)).

## SSI and disability benefits

Supplemental Security Income is a separate program from retirement and disability benefits, and the same letter request covers it ([Social Security Administration, Get a benefit verification letter](https://www.ssa.gov/manage-benefits/get-benefit-letter)). Lenders on Fannie Mae’s guide ask for the award letter and proof of current receipt for it ([Fannie Mae Selling Guide B3-3.4-15, Social Security Income](https://selling-guide.fanniemae.com/sel/b3-3.4-15/social-security-income)).

If a landlord asks for disability income proof, the benefit letter states the monthly amount without naming the condition. You do not need to share medical records to prove the income.

## For the professional asking for it

Name the document you want. "Proof of Social Security income" sends clients hunting; "your current benefit verification letter, downloaded as a PDF" gets you the right file.

1. Ask for the current benefit letter and, for a tax or averaging file, the latest SSA-1099.
2. Check the name, the monthly amount and the date on the letter.
3. Match the monthly amount to the deposit on a recent bank statement.
4. For benefits on someone else’s record, ask how long they continue.

## The template: Social Security income proof request

Send this to a client or applicant who receives Social Security or SSI. Delete the SSA-1099 line if you only need current income.
