> **In brief:** Amended tax return documents start with the original return as filed, then the new or corrected forms that change it, such as a W-2c, a late Schedule K-1 or a missed Form 1098-T. You file them with Form 1040-X and a complete corrected return.

## The checklist: Form 1040-X document pack: original, changes, refund

**Not advice.** This page is general information, not tax, legal or HR advice. Rules change: check the cited source and ask your own professional before you rely on it. Last reviewed October 25, 2026.

Fill in the tax year being amended at the top. Send the original filing first, then the documents that change it.

### The original filing

- [ ] Original Form 1040 as filed, with every schedule and form: The copy accepted by the IRS, not a later draft
- [ ] IRS account transcript for the year: Shows any change the IRS already made
- [ ] Any IRS notice received for that year: Answer it instead of amending if it already fixes the error
- [ ] State return as filed: A federal change can change the state tax; it is amended separately

### What changed

- [ ] Form W-2c and the original Form W-2: Corrected wages or withholding from the employer
- [ ] Corrected Form 1099-INT, 1099-DIV or 1099-B: Marked "corrected" by the payer or broker
- [ ] Late or revised Schedule K-1: From the partnership, S corporation or trust
- [ ] Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC not reported: Every payer for the year
- [ ] Form 1098 or Form 1098-T missed at filing: With proof of the amounts actually paid
- [ ] Proof for a new deduction or credit: Receipts, donation letters, childcare invoices
- [ ] Proof of a dependent or filing status change: Birth certificate, divorce decree, custody papers

### Refund, payment and signature

- [ ] Voided check or account and routing numbers: For a direct deposit refund on an e-filed 1040-X
- [ ] Payment source if more tax is due: Pay by the April due date to limit interest
- [ ] Form 8888, if the refund is split between accounts: Only for a direct deposit refund on an e-filed 1040-X
- [ ] How the original was filed, and its tax year: Tax year 2021 or earlier, or a paper original filed this year, means a paper 1040-X
- [ ] Signed Form 8879: Only when your preparer e-files the amendment

## When an amended return is needed, and when it is not

You amend when something on the return was wrong or missing. The IRS lists changes to your filing status, income, deductions, credits, dependents or tax liability as reasons to amend ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). A form that arrives after you filed is the usual trigger.

Some errors fix themselves. You do not need to amend if the IRS says it corrected an error, or if it accepted the return without a form or schedule or asks you to send it ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). In that case, answer the IRS letter instead.

Time matters when the change lowers your tax. To claim a refund, you generally file within 3 years after the original return or 2 years after paying the tax, whichever is later ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). If you filed early, you count from the April deadline ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)).

## The documents that usually trigger an amendment

An **amendment trigger** is the document that shows the first return was wrong. Next, a **corrected form** is the reissued W-2 or 1099 with the corrected box checked, and that copy supersedes the one you filed with. Name it before anything else, because it sets which schedules change and which records you need.

| Trigger document | What it changes | What else to gather |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Corrected Form W-2 from the employer | Wages or withholding | The original Form W-2 for comparison |
| Corrected Form 1099 (INT, DIV, B, NEC) | Interest, dividends, gains or business income | The original form and the broker or payer letter |
| Schedule K-1 that arrived late or was revised | Pass-through income, losses or credits | Last year’s basis and any carryover figures |
| Form 1098-T or Form 1098 missed at filing | Education credit or mortgage interest | Proof of the payments behind the form |
| A dependent or filing status change | Credits and the tax rate schedule | Proof of the facts, such as a birth certificate or divorce decree |

## What goes in the amended return itself

**Form 1040-X** is the form that shows the original amounts in column A, the net change in column B and the correct amounts in column C, with the reasons in Part II ([Form 1040-X instructions](https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040x)). To amend, you file Form 1040-X and submit a complete amended Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR for that year, with your changes ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). You also attach any supporting documents and new or changed forms and schedules ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)).

A complete corrected return means the preparer needs the whole original file, not only the new form. For example, a late Schedule K-1 can change the income limits for a credit claimed elsewhere on the return. Ask for the [prior-year return](/documents/prior-year-tax-return) as filed, including every schedule.

You can file up to 3 amended returns for the same year ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). If your preparer files electronically, they file Form 8879, the e-file signature authorization, with the 1040-X ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)).

Some amendments still go on paper. That is the case for a return for tax year 2021 or before, and for a prior-year return first filed on paper earlier in the current year ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). For example, a 2024 return mailed in February 2026 is amended on paper in 2026, so plan for mailing time and a paper check.

## Refunds, payments and the state return

For tax years 2021 and later, you can request the refund on an amended return by direct deposit when you e-file the 1040-X ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). A paper 1040-X gets a paper check ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). So a voided check or the account and routing numbers belong in the file.

If you owe more, file and pay by the April due date to avoid penalties and interest ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). After that date, do not compute interest or penalties yourself on the amended return, since the IRS adjusts them ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)).

A federal change can change your state tax. The IRS says to contact your state tax agency and not to attach the state return to the federal amendment ([IRS, File an amended return](https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-amended-return)). Gather the state return as filed too.

## After you file: status and records

The status of an amended return appears about 3 weeks after you submit it ([IRS, Where’s my amended return?](https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return)). Processing usually takes 8 to 12 weeks, and some take up to 16 weeks ([IRS, Where’s my amended return?](https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return)).

Keep the amended return with the original, plus every document that caused the change. The records must still exist if the IRS reviews the claim, so the [retention schedule](/checklists/tax-documents/how-long-to-keep) starts again from the amended filing.

1. Pull the original return as filed and an IRS account transcript for that year.
2. Collect the trigger document and the original form it corrects.
3. Gather the proof behind each change, such as receipts or a decree.
4. Add bank details for a direct deposit refund, or payment details if you owe.
5. Sign Form 8879 if your preparer e-files, then file and note the date.
